The idea of a twin flame can be confusing at the best of times. It confronts our understanding of who we are, why we’re here and (most of all) what a relationship is. Understanding what a twin flame is is the first step to furthering your path to reaching union with your own.
A twin flame is the other part of your soul. The yin to your yang. An incredibly rare connection that few will experience.
A twin flame is not a ‘normal’ romantic relationship. It’s not a soulmate (more on that later). It’s incredibly rare and most people don’t have one.
A twin flame is a relationship of complete and utter passion. It’s all-consuming, all-encompassing and completely life-changing. Not just for both of you but for others around you. Twin flames push each other forward and unlock abilities and opportunities you never thought possible.
For help on this, I’ve roped my own twin flame (who we refer to as John) to help give a balanced view on both sides of the connection.
So, What Is a Twin Flame?
The basic idea is one of the few things we all seem to agree on.
Twin flames are two halves of the same soul that split and come back together over multiple lifetimes before eventually coming together one final time in reunion.
This process of separation is to allow growth and healing. The twin flames split so they can experience life in its totality. They come back together to share their knowledge, experience and help the universe evolve.
The history of twin flames is a little hairy and we often talk about references to Plato and vague references in the Bible. The truth is the term ‘twin flame’ is reasonably new but the idea has been around for a long, long time.
The connection is intense. Special. Incredibly rare. Most people don’t have a twin flame.
If you find yourself in a position of knowing who your twin flame is and understanding the journey then you have an incredibly rare opportunity to take control of your journey and reach union.
The Misunderstandings
Before we go further, I need to address the elephant in the room.
Nobody knows the specifics for certain. You’ll see a lot of people argue about the various twin flame stages. You’ll see people bicker over terminology and what signs mean what.
This is a spiritual connection. We only see the tip of the iceberg on the physical level. On top of that, the twin flame journey is incredibly unique and no two ever look exactly the same.
I would take everything with a pinch of salt. Be wary of anyone who claims to have esoteric knowledge or special ability. That includes advice here.
It’s not surprising that people disagree because we have different experiences of the journey. I base my advice on my own experience and the incredibly privileged position of hearing from other people constantly. I see a lot of patterns when I do twin flame readings and we can combine this with other practices like Tarot, Numerology and astral projection to get insight into what is going on.
It’s not at all surprising to see people disagree about what twin flames are, what it takes to reach union and every minute aspect of it. I don’t seek to tell anyone that they’re right or wrong.
At the end of the day, it’s a belief. One I find consistent, powerful and downright life-changing but your terminology doesn’t need to match my own (or anyone else’s).
The journey has changed a lot. The internet gives us a way for twin flames to connect, share stories and advice on how to further their path to union. We have resources available that we’ve never had before but this also brings a risk of misinformation.
A twin flame is not a soulmate. We have this idea from Hollywood that we all have a soulmate out there and, while important, this kind of connection is far more common. I don’t want to take away from anyone who is with their soulmate but it’s not the same thing.
What Are the Signs of Twin Flames? Are You One?
This is one area I see some real potential risks with. I do talk about common signs here and there but always with the same warning.
External signs should be guidelines and not hard-set rules. You might not see any of these, you might see different combinations, you might see them and not be consciously aware of them.
Don’t judge yourself, your twin or the path you share together on these signs. Use them as rough guidelines and not gospel.
The internal signs are usually more reliable because they come from your intuition but, again, don’t be too quick to judge yourself if you don’t have them. This comes from well-meaning advice online that doesn’t always reflect reality and the unique experiences you’ll truly experience.

What Are Twin Flames Supposed to Do? What Next?
The twin flame path is one of progress and growth. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself possible and, in turn, helping your twin to do the same.
This doesn’t mean your relationship will flow easily. Perhaps one of the most common trends we see is the twin flame separation stage.
The Separation Stage
If twin flames are such a special connection, why don’t you get this Hollywood moment of love at first sight and happily ever after from day one?
Twin flames often meet, sometimes have a romantic relationship for a well and then they separate. Or, sometimes, you might awaken before your twin does.
This is not the end of your journey. Twin flames separate for a reason. It’s a necessary part of the twin flame journey and, ultimately, it will help you to reach union.
In the short term being separated from the other half of your soul is painful. It hurts physically, mentally and spiritually. You’ll feel a deep longing for your twin and this can feel all-consuming.
Over time, you’ll start to see the purpose of the separation stage. You come apart simply because you’re not (yet) ready for union. Some will repeat this coming together and apart again several times before getting it right. It can be a painful and frustrating process but it’s also an important one. It gives both of you the space required to further your journey.
Just because you’ve separated does not mean you’ve failed.
It also doesn’t mean that your twin is the one who has to figure it out. Separation is a chance for both of you to do the work required and, make no mistake, there is work to be done.
When we say twin flames are not normal relationships that means they don’t progress in normal ways. It’s not about using the right chat up lines, being great in bed or taking them to expensive restaurants.
The twin flame journey is a spiritual one. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself.
This brings us to…
The Purpose of Twin Flames
What is the twin flame purpose? Why did you meet in this lifetime?
Your own twin flame is your perfect mirror. When you first meet they’ll reveal everything that is unhealed within you and that includes your greatest insecurities and fears.
They’ll also show you a level of connection, understanding and attraction that you just can’t find anywhere else.
The twin flame relationship is designed to help you heal. It’s an opportunity for you to grow and become the best version of yourself possible. It opens opportunities that you wouldn’t have expected and some believe that twin flames reaching union push humanity, as a whole, further forward.
The journey isn’t always easy but it’s always rewarding.
